Fitting a K-Series
C855 YVM - Robin Hood Exmo

Alternator
The 1.6 engine we acquired was from a 400 series Rover which was equipped with a lot of additional ancillaries including power steering and air conditioning. We obviously didn't want or need these - indeed, they wouldn't fit anyway. So you need to remove the power steering and air conditioning pumps and the associated brackets that go with them. The alternator is fine but it will not mount in the same location as it did in a 400 series Rover - it will be too high up and will foul the body of an Exmo (where it is rolled over at the top for strength).

Don't panic, however, as all you need to do is replace it with the bracket and belt from a Rover Metro (100 series) - this is nice and easy as none of the 100-series ever had power steering or air conditioning. The brings the alternator down and in towards the block slightly, and keeps it nicely away from the body.

Metro alternator bracket in place The new alternator bracket fits neatly into place and there's no major jiggery-pokery involved.
Alternator adjustment bracket Don't forget to acquire the alternator adjustment bracket from the Metro too - this fits to the lower mount of the alternator and is used to adjust the tension of the alternator belt (fairly obvious).
Only two wires feed to the alternator, and these should be part of the engine sub-loom (this is fixed to the engine as opposed to being part of the main vehicle wiring loom). You should have a thick brown wire and a thinner brown/yellow wire (both fixed with screw terminals).
