Fitting a K-Series
C855 YVM - Robin Hood Exmo

K-Series in Exmowhen our Pinto finally died we decided it was to be replaced with something modern, light and reasonably powerful. We wanted the joy of fuel injection, electronic ignition and all the joys of an electronically managed engine - refinement, easy starting, reliable running and little or no need for regular tuning. The K-Series fitted the bill (as do many other engines of course, including Vauxhall's twin cam and Ford's Zetec).

We'd also seen it fitted in Caterhams to good effect, so we knew that theoretically it could go into the space... Robin Hood's are physically larger than Caterhams, so if it can go in one of those it surely should fit in a Hood.... shouldn't it?! Well, some general dimension taking with a tape measure seemed to back up our thoughts so we ordered a 1600cc K-Series motor and thought we'd just suck it and see.

A shortlist of required items :-

  • K-Series 16v engine (1400/1600/1800cc)
  • MEMS ECU (if using standard injection system)
  • MEMS Security Module (alarm/immobiliser box) if applicable
  • Rover wiring loom to suit (Metro or 200 series recommended - 400 series is a bit overly-complex)
  • Original key fob to match alarm if applicable
  • Ford Type 9 (or Type N) 4 or 5 speed gearbox
  • Left-hand Caterham engine mount bracket for wet-sump K-Series model
  • Right-hand Caterham engine mount bracket for wet-sump K-Series model
  • 2x Caterham Engine mount rubbers (these are actually Jaguar E-Type engine mounts but they still worked out cheaper buying from Caterham than a local motor factors shop!)
  • Suitable bellhousing to mate K-Series block to Ford Type9/N gearbox
  • Half-decent MIG Welder!
